R4.5 million worth of abalone, 4 accused sentenced, Cape Town

Renaldo Marcos Mucache (23), Boniface Albino Muchanga (28), Joshua Daniel Chaque (38) and Valton Beca (26) were sentenced for multiple counts of possession of abalone, fish processing establishment and contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 to a fine of R300 000-00 or to undergo 36 months imprisonment of which R150 000-00 or 18 months is suspended for five years on conditions that they are not going to commit the same offences.

This comes after they pleaded guilty on 24 March 2023, in the Cape Town Magistrate Court.

The sentence comes after their arrest in Milnerton on 2 January 2023 during a search and seizure operation executed by a multi-disciplinary team that included the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Crime Intelligence as well as officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs (DFFE).

8893 Units of shucked abalone to the value of over R4.5 million were forfeited to the State.

The accused were further sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which is wholly suspended for a period of 5 years on condition that the accused are not convicted of a contravention of the Immigration Act.

Effectively, all four accused will serve a year and six months (18 months) direct imprisonment.
