Statistics – Mpumalanga’s shocking crime figures

Based on the police’s latest crime statistics, it looks like Mpumalanga is losing the fight against crime.

In the period between October and December last year, murder in the province increased with a shocking 9,1%.

Contact crimes increased with an average of 6,4%. A total of 10 522 incidents were reported. That is 632 more than the corresponding period in 2021.

The police must take decisive action to prevent this type of crime, and must respond to incidents more swiftly.

The province needs more police officers to address the sky-high levels of crime. At present, the provincial police force is understaffed.

New police vehicles are frequently promised, but nothing ever realises. And while waiting, the people are increasingly exposed to serious crime.

Some units, like the unit for domestic violence, child protection and sexual offences, still only have one or two vehicles at their disposal to service a ward that covers four to five towns. It is absolutely unacceptable.

The FF Plus is also concerned about the rise in truck jackings. It rose sharply by 17,8% to 337 incidents.

Most of these incidents were reported in the Delmas region in the Victor Khanye Municipality.

Other serious crimes increased with 6,9%.

The FF Plus asked the MEC for Community Safety, Mr Vusi Shongwe, to explain what decisive steps will be taken to address these shocking crime figures.

Mr Shongwe was unable to come up with an answer.

He was also unable to say when the promised, and crucial, response vehicles will be available.
