In line with the SAPS’s vision to prevent and combat crime that may threaten the safety and security of communities, police members attached to Grassy Park Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 25-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 1 April 2023.
The members responded to reports of shooting on 1 April 2023 in Parkwood area and while patrolling in the area they noticed a member of a local gang grouping in Orientation Crescent, Parkwood in possession of a firearm.
When the suspect saw the patrol vehicle he ran away and threw the firearm on the ground. He was apprehended for charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and was detained at Grassy Park SAPS.
The firearm a shotgun with two shotgun rounds was handed in as exhibit. Ownership is yet to be established
In an unrelated matter on 20 June 2022 members of Prasa Protection Service received information that suspects were busy digging and cutting electrical cables in Elsies River.
They rushed to the scene and spotted the suspects, still busy with their illegal activities. They called for back-up from the SAPS while they proceeded to arrest two suspects aged 33 and 49. Eight metres of essential infrastructure cable were already removed by the suspects.
Both suspects were handed over to the SAPS for detention.
The matter was transferred to the Economic Infrastructure Task Team for further investigation. After the investigation was finalized, a successful conviction was secured in Parow Regional court.
Both accused were sentenced to imprisonment for twelve years.
