Emfuleni officials don’t receive their salaries

Officials and councillors of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) did not, as usual, receive their salaries yesterday on the 25th of the month.

On 19 April, Rand Water attached Emfuleni’s bank account for outstanding debt amounting to R888 245 710.

In good faith, though, the water supplier lifted the attachment order for a day so that salaries could be paid.

In the meantime, a number of Emfuleni officials also approached the High Court for an attachment order for benefits amounting to R600 000 owed to them. The High Court gave the officials permission to attach the Municipality’s bank account.

As a result, no salaries could be paid out yesterday.

Emfuleni owes the officials who applied for the attachment order around R600 000 for, among other things, housing allowances and other allowances not paid to them since Emfuleni was upgraded to a grade-B Municipality in 2018.

Although these officials did receive salaries that were in line with the new job levels, their benefits were never adjusted and paid out accordingly.

Officials and councillors are bearing the brunt of the ANC-controlled Emfuleni’s mismanagement of the Municipality.

With the ANC in control of Emfuleni, there is no light at the end of this dark tunnel and the Municipality will keep teetering from one catastrophe to the next.

Emfuleni deserves better than the ANC.
