A 27-year-old suspect was arrested by the members of Vehicle Theft Unit and Mthatha Cash-In-Transit (CIT) Task Team of the Hawks on Thursday, 11 May 2023.
This is subsequent to the suspect claiming to be the owner of the Ford Ranger bakkie that was used in the foiled cross pavement CIT robbery that claimed the life of one of the four suspects at Circle Spar in Mthatha during the early morning hours of Wednesday, 10 May 2023.
It is alleged that on 11 May 2023, the suspect went to South African Police Service (SAPS) pound to claim the white Ford Ranger bakkie which was used by the robbers as a getaway vehicle.
He is reported to have claimed that the vehicle was hijacked from him on the morning of the robbery.
Upon questioning the suspect, it transpired that he had a pending warrant of arrest with Vehicle Theft Unit hence his arrest by the joint team.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on 15 May 2023 facing charges of theft of motor vehicle.
