Baba Khwelemthini (38) was sentenced to spend 20 years in prison for various offences including attempted murder, rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances on Tuesday 30 May 2023.
On 2 February 2018, Baba and two other males attacked the 36-year-old female while walking between Khotsong and Dinaweng Informal Settlements with her 39-year-old boyfriend.
Baba raped the female victim as the two other attackers chased her boyfriend, cut his stomach open with a knife, robbed him of his cellular telephone and left him to die.
The 39-year-old boyfriend was helped by community members and the two were rushed to local hospital for Medical attention. A case of rape and attempted murder was opened at Kopanong Police Station.
Another rape case had been opened after the 26-year-old female was attacked by three unknown males in Chris Hani Settlement in Mangaung on 16 November 2008.
The victim was walking to her grandmother’s house at about 05:10 when she was accosted by uknown malesand they raped her and robbed her off her cellular telephone.
The two dockets were assigned to Sergeant Mosiuoa Ntholeng of Serial and Electronic Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to investigate.
Baba Khwelemthini became a wanted suspect in a case of robbery with firearm opened in Edenburg. Information led the police to a hideout in General De Wet near Bloemfontein where Baba was arrested on the 28 September 2021.
Forensic Science investigation linked Baba Khwelemthini to the two cases that were opened at Kopanong through DNA analysis.
The trial started in Bloemfontein Regional Court and Baba Khwelemthini was found guilty and sentenced as follows:
Count 1 the charge was rape, twenty year imprisonment.
Count 2 of robbery with aggravating circumstances, ten years imprisonment.
Count 3 of rape, eight years imprisonment.
Count 4 of robbery with aggravating circumstances, ten years imprisonment.
Count 5 of attempted murder, eight years imprisonment.
Count 6 of robbery, ten years imprisonment.
The sentences will run concurrently.
