Dagga worth R47k recovered, Eswatini smuggler arrested

A suspect was arrested for allegedly smuggling dagga from the Kingdom of Eswatini into South Africa on Wednesday, 7 June 2023.

Bonginkosi Makamo (24), a man from the kingdom of Eswatini was arrested by members from Border Policing in Oshoek.

Police noticed Makamo at the hiking spot with a suspicious luggage in his possession. The police cornered him and searched his bag whereby two large rolls of dagga were found inside his bag.

That was when Makamo was arrested and charged for possession of about 11, 20 kilograms of dagga estimated at a street value of about R47040-00.

Makamo appeared in the Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 8 June 2023 where he was remanded in custody for further investigation and his case was postponed to Tuesday, 13 June 2023.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela commended members for their vigilance which enabled them to intercept the mission thereby recovering dagga before it reached the market. The General further encouraged communities to work closely with the police and report any criminality.
