Three suspects aged between 21 and 41 will appear in the Libode Magistrates’ court for allegations of possession of firearms without license.
The trio was apprehended by Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) of the Hawks in an intelligence driven joint operation with East London Crime Intelligence (CI) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Libode on 8 June 2023.
The joint team followed information about two suspects who were hitch hiking from East London to meet their accomplices at Mthatha and conspiring to commit robbery at Libode area.
The suspects were followed to an RDP house in Libode at Meganom Township.
Upon seeing the police, the three suspects fled the scene whilst their accomplices were arrested. The suspects were arrested in a Toyota vehicle which upon preliminary investigation was discovered to belong to the father of one of the suspects.
Two 9mm pistols and one shotgun with serial numbers filed off were found in possession of the suspects.
The joint success of the team is commended by the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya in anticipation of a breakthrough in other serious cases under investigation by the arrest of the trio.
