The Regional Court in Mokopane have convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old male accused on Thursday, 15 June 2023 to life term imprisonment for raping a 12- year-old girl following a lengthy trial.
The court heard that the victim was at her neighbour’s residence when she decided to go home to close the windows. The accused unexpectedly followed the victim and forcefully raped her inside the house at Zebediela, Sekgweng under Mokopane policing area on 26 October 2013.
It is reported that the Police and members of the Emergency Medical Services were called by the neighbours at the scene and the child was taken to hospital for medical attention because she was severely injured.
A case of rape was opened and the accused since evaded arrest until he was nabbed after committing another rape case in 2014.
The accused was positively linked through forensic investigation with DNA samples collected from the victim while in prison.
The accused was denied bail until he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm and for his particulars to be endorsed in the Register for Sexual Offenders.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Police Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigation team for their meticulous investigations that led to the sentencing of the accused.
