Hlengani Voster Maluleke (41) was convicted and sentenced for corruption by Brixton Magistrates’ Court on 23 June 2023.
He was sentenced to four (4) years imprisonment with an option of R20, 000.00 fine, of which half of the sentence was suspended for five years, and he effectively paid R10, 000.00.
The accused conducted environmental inspections at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers and inconsistencies were found in the store.
He subsequently issued the store with a R5000 fine on 13 July 2022. On 15 July 2022, the suspect visited the store again and demanded R1000 to squash the fine.
The matter was reported to the Hawks for further exploration which led to his arrest.
Maluleke was arrested during operation that was executed by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Johannesburg while he came to collect R1000 gratification at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers on 18 July 2022.
He was released on bail of R1000 on 19 July 2022.
He appeared in the same court on Monday, 12 June 2023 following his re-arrest after he absconded prior to the sentence handed down to him.
