Lydenburg fuel station safe bombed

A group of suspects reportedly failed to get cash from a safe after detonating some explosives at a certain fuel station in Lydenburg.

The police are investigating the incident whereby five suspects staged a robbery in the early hours of Monday, 3 July 2023 around 00:10 am.

A count of contravention of the Explosives Act is currently being investigated by the Police.

The shocking incident it said to have occurred on that fateful day which began when a man driving in a white Ford Ranger arrived at the fuel station. It is alleged that he drew a firearm then held the fuel attendant hostage before instructing him to fill up the tank for his vehicle.

Thereafter, it is said that the armed man reportedly forced him to join his co-workers inside the shop where they were all held at gunpoint.

Meanwhile more suspects are said to have joined in and reportedly set up some explosives.

The employees were moved out of the shop by the suspects before a loud explosion was heard twice as the explosives were detonated.

The suspects immediately proceeded to the shop but for now it appears like they came out empty handed when they fled the scene while firing shots as they fled.

No injuries were reported thus far.

Police was alerted about the incident and upon arrival, a case was opened and the investigation is currently underway though no one has been arrested so far.

The Police are urging anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS App. All information received will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has vowed that the suspects thereof will be hunted down and be brought to book.
