The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the Life and 2 years imprisonment sentence meted out to Peter Kaundura by the Naphuno Regional Court for rape of a six-year-old girl and illegal immigration on Tuesday, 25 July 2023.
The court found out that on Wednesday, 1 January 2020, during the night in Topanama village outside Lephepane, the accused who was staying with his girlfriend, her 6 year old grandchild and uncle, woke up while his girlfriend was asleep and started to rape the 6 year old girl.
He was caught in the act by the uncle who came back to the house in the late hours.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police and a case of rape was opened.
The case was handed over to Detective Warrant Officer Matome Johannes Ramatseba of Tzaneen Family Violence and Child Sexual Offences (FCS) for investigation.
He traced and arrested the accused on the 17 March, 2020.
He proceeded with the investigation and managed to oppose bail for the accused in court.
The accused remained in custody until the court convicted him of rape and contravention of the illegal immigration Act and sentenced him to Life imprisonment for rape and 2 years for Contravention of Immigration Act.
The sentences will run concurrently.
