Mahwelereng Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old rapist to ten year imprisonment

POLOKWANE – On Thursday 10 August 2023, Mahwelereng Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old male, Tshepho Katlego Menyuku, rape accused to ten year imprisonment.

The rape incident happened on 22 November 2020, at night in the Bakenburg Mabula area, when the accused and the victim were at the local tavern. The court heard that accused told the victim that her boyfriend was calling her outside the tavern. The victim went outside to meet the boyfriend at the back gate, only to find he was not there. Afterwards, the accused forcefully grabbed the victim to the nearest bush and raped her. She was further taken to his residence in the Mabula area, where he released her the following morning.

The victim alerted the Police about the incident the morning after she was released, and a case of rape was opened and sent to Family Violence, Children Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) for further investigation, Detective Sergeant Lesetja Langa was tasked with investigations.

The accused was arrested in December 2020 and detained at Tinmyne Police Station.

Bail was successfully opposed until he was found guilty today, on Thursday 10 August 2023, on one count of rape: Ten years imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the conviction and subsequent sentencing meted out by Mahwelereng regional Court to the accused of rape.
