Anti-Gang Unit disarm suspects in the Western Cape

WESTERN CAPE – The determination by police in the Western Cape to rid the streets of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals and to prevent the commission of serious and violent crime yielded success when suspects were arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

In the early hours of Friday morning, 18 August 2023 vigilant members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit Combat Team conducted an intelligence-driven operation in collaboration with the Anti-Gang Unit. They followed up on information about a firearm hidden at a premises in Sercor Park, Strand. Upon searching the identified premises in Zaida Street, the members discovered a 9mm pistol with nine rounds of ammunition concealed in a green in colour basmati rice bag in the cupboard. A 30-year-old male was arrested and detained.

He is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, once he has been charged.

On Thursday, 17 August 2023, members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed in Bishop Lavis Area due to ongoing violence in the area, followed up information and proceeded to a house in Bishop Lavis where they conducted a search of a premises in Olyfberg Way, Bishop Lavis. The search resulted in the discovery of three firearms with ammunition that was hidden underneath a cupboard in the bedroom.

A 23-year-old female was arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Furthermore, four suspects believed to be members of a local gang group, aged between 17 and 37 were arrested on a murder charge in Bishop Lavis.

Once charged the suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on the mentioned charges.
