The Northern Cape SAPS executed 22 high density operations under the authority of Operation Shanela to address priority crimes in hotspot areas.
Actions executed focused on contact crimes especially rape and murder, illegal firearms, robbery, burglary, illicit mining, damage /theft of essential infrastructure, drug related crimes and theft.
SAPS joined forces with external role players including, traffic police, wardens, private security, the Community Police Forum, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health, Department of Transport, Department of Social Development, SARS, Department of Small Businesses and Department of Education.
Senior Officers commanded Operations throughout the Province.
Operations in the Greater Kimberley area were led under the command of the Divisional Commissioner for Human Resource Development, Lt Gen (Dr) Bongiwe Zulu.
Northern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Maj Gen Luntu Ngubelanga led operations in the Pixley ka Seme District.
The multi-disciplinary high density operation executed over 11 000 actions. This included roadblocks and 32 vehicle check points. 3929 persons and 1627 vehicles were searched.
10 hostels were searched and 19 unlicensed liquor premises were closed.
1533 compliance inspections were conducted at licensed liquor premises, second hand goods dealers, scrap yards, firearm dealers and tuck shops. Farms and mines were also visited.
A total of 383 offenders were arrested for crimes namely; robbery, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, assault common, illegal possession of drugs, dealing in drugs, possession of dangerous weapons, illegal dealing in liquor, burglary, illicit mining and illegal immigrants.
Detectives executed daily tracing operations and arrested 133 suspects wanted for crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH and illegal possession of a firearm.
A significant amount of alcohol and drugs was confiscated as well as 520kg of copper cable, counterfeit goods and dangerous weapons.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola as well as Provincial and District Management embraced the successes achieved as well as the tenacity of all role players in the execution of the operation. She assured the community that SAPS will work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all inhabitants during the Festive Season and beyond.
