Police members in the Western Cape recovered unlicensed firearms and ammunition, drugs and presumed stolen property in the execution of their duties.
Harare Crime Prevention Unit, deployed to combat the ongoing gang violence in the area was busy with high density operations on Monday, 13 November 2023, near the corners of Jafta K Masemola Road and Oscar Mpetha Drive in Makhaza at around 02:00. They spotted an unknown man who fled into the informal settlement when he saw the patrol vehicle. The police members gave chase but failed to locate the man. The members later received information that the unknown man went to Harare SAPS to report a case of carjacking. Upon their arrival at Harare SAPS office, they interviewed the man, searched him and confiscated a firearm with ammunition. They detained the 40-year-old man on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hijacked vehicle and perjury
In an unrelated intervention police members from the Provincial Anti Economical Extortion Task Team pounced on an address in Navara Street Belhar in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 November 2023. Upon entering the premises, they found a man in possession of a consignment of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of R10 000. They continued their search and in the process confiscated a 9mm Vector pistol and a consignment of ammunition. They detained three adult males on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and dealing in drugs.
Meanwhile Maitland Flying Squad members located a Toyota Corolla in Browns Farm, Philippi East on Tuesday, 14 November 2023 which was reported earlier as hijacked. The members approached the vehicle and upon inspection they discovered presumed motor vehicle stolen parts inside a shack. They detained three males on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and the possession of presumed stolen property.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Khayelitsha, Bellville and Athlone Magistrate court’s on the mentioned charges.
