The Phoenix Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) detectives have secured a double life imprisonment sentence and 38 years’ in jail for Eza Ali, a 26-year-old Malawian national who was found guilty of kidnapping, rape, robbery, pointing of a knife and housebreaking. The sentence was handed by the Verulam Regional Court on 28 November 2023.
On the evening of 21 March 2021, a woman, who was 33-year-old at the time, was walking with a companion along the Makhosi Vumile Road in Geneva, Phoenix when Ali approached them from behind wielding a knife. The woman’s companion managed to run to safety, however, Ali grabbed the woman and dragged her to the nearby bushes where he raped her at knife point. Ali was so brazen that he forcefully took his victim to her place of residence where he ransacked the house and stole several items before dragging her again to the bushes where he continued the rape ordeal until the following day.
Ten days later, Ali was apprehended by community members and after positive identification he was arrested and positively linked with the rape case. Detectives successfully opposed his several bids for bail and he was kept behind bars until the day of the day of his sentencing.
