A 39-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday morning, 11 December 2023, at his residence in Strubens Valley by the West Rand based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team.
It is reported that the team, comprising of West Rand Serious Organised Crime of the Hawks, National Priority Violent Crime, West Rand Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Crime Intelligence had descended upon the property to execute a search warrant. Two rooms on the premises were found to have dagga plants in various stages of cultivation. The rooms had been converted into greenhouses. A further search of the kitchen led to the discovery of two safes with keys hanging onto them. Inside the safe, the team found a firearm and ammunition of different calibre firearms. The dagga plants, equipment and the ammunition value is estimated at R950 000.
The suspect will be appearing in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of cultivating dagga and possession of an illegal firearm as well as ammunition.
