Xolisa Mbundwana (33), Sinesipho Mandoyi (33), and Loyiso Nxiwa (38) were each sentenced to R5000-00 fine or four years imprisonment on charges of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years imprisonment fully suspended for five years on charges of attempted murder when they appeared before the Koppies Regional Court on 14 December 2023.
The accused were arrested in February 2021 by members of the Klerksdorp based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in collaboration with Bidvest Protea Coin Security. This follows after about 20 suspects had allegedly attempted to enter the premises of Great Noligwa Gold Mine near Vierfontein by breaking the wall.
The suspects allegedly fled the scene following a shootout with security officers and one suspect was arrested inside the premises. Meticulous investigation by the Hawks led to the arrest of two suspects in the areas of Welkom and Kempton Park. The accused made a series of court appearances until they were convicted and sentenced.
