Committed police officers detain suspects for possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms

Police mandate to create a safe environment in all communities yielded positive results when members arrested several suspects in the Western Cape.

On Thursday, 04 January 2024, members attached to Delft SAPS received information that firearms are being stored at a premises in N2 Gateway, Delft. They immediately operationalised the information and around 07:00 armed with a search warrant, they searched the premises and the man who opened the door. The members discovered a .38 special revolver hidden under a bed, and arrested a 34-year-old man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile Mitchells Plain SAPS Crime Prevention Unit responded to information about heavily armed suspects seated in a motor vehicle parked opposite the SAPS office. The member spotted the vehicle and followed the vehicle until they stopped the motor vehicle on the corners of Danube and Zambesi Streets in Portlands.

The suspects pointed the police members with firearms which resulted in the police members taking action. They restored calm and searched the occupants which resulted in the detention of four males when they were found in possession of five unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as one prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Bellville and Mitchells Plain Magistrate Courts on the mentioned charges.
