The aftermath of the riots of July 2021 left his mark.
The South African Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Language Communities (CRL) this morning makes their reports known about the riots, which led to it and proposals of possible disciplinary action.
The riots originated in KwaZulu-Natal, and also occurred in Gauteng. Many people died during the violent riots, while about R50 billion was damaged. The reports were compiled after sessions with various role players.
The commission says the 2021 riots took place amid social and economic uncertainty, which was especially caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. At that stage, 34.4% of the country’s people were unemployed.
A commissioner at the commission, Philile Ntuli, says the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma also has a huge share in the origin of the riots.
Ntuli said in a summary of the report that although people were financially struggling because of the pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa should have taken better precautions. She also believes the police were not prepared sufficiently.
“Not enough has been done to manage digital communication about the riots.” According to Ntuli, communication on social media has unleashed further violence.
