A total of 71 official firearms disappeared from the Army and Correctional Services arms supply between the 2019 financial year and the end of last year. The figure was announced months after the leader of the Freedom Front Plus asked questions about this in parliament.
Between 2019 and the end of 2023, 53 firearms were lost to the military or were stolen, while 18 firearms of correctional services were stolen or lost during that period.
About 295 rounds of ammunition disappeared from Correctional Services’ inventory between 2019 and the end of 2023, and 6 808 rounds from those of the military.
No arrests occurred at Correctional Services, while 22 officials of the military were arrested. Only five have been convicted so far.
A total of 1,725 firearms from the SAPS were stolen or lost between April 2021 and July 2023.
