A fraud case dating back to 2016 has been successfully cracked by the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit (CCIU) in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District when they arrested an Eastern Cape farmer for setting his own grain harvester alight on his other farm in the Clocolan district.
In the early hours of 31 March 2025, the unit made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a fraudulent insurance claim that has been under scrutiny for several years. The investigation, which began in 2016, led to the arrest of a 56-year-old man, Mr. Johannes Conraard Muller, who stands accused of defrauding an insurance company of hundreds of thousands of rands.
Mr. Muller, a farmer from the Eastern Cape, allegedly set fire to his own grain harvester motor vehicle on his farm located in the Clocolan district. He then submitted a fraudulent claim to his insurance company, providing false information to support his claim for the destroyed vehicle. The insurance company processed and paid an amount of R700 000 to Mr. Muller based on the falsified details.
After extensive and thorough investigation by the Bethlehem CCIU, the accused was arrested and charged with fraud. Today, he appeared before the Clocolan Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail of R500. Mr. Muller’s next court appearance is scheduled for 14 May 2025.
