AfriForum Community Safety Spokesperson Jacques Broodryk said Malema’s court appearance tomorrow is due to pressure from the lobby group.
The civil rights group AfriForum, laid charges against Malema in 2018 after a video emerged of him appearing to recklessly discharge a firearm in public at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.

“Following continuous pressure by AfriForum, Julius Malema, leader of the EFF, will again appear in the East London Regional Court on 30 January 2023.”

AFRIFORUM APPLIED PRESSURE TO GET MALEMA BACK IN COURT
“The National Prosecuting Authority is prosecuting Malema for the discharge of a firearm in a built-up or public area without good reason to do so, as well as the possession of a firearm and ammunition without the necessary licence and authorisation,” Broodryk said.
On the day Malema was discharging the rifle, the EFF was celebrating its fifth anniversary in East London. In the video, party leaders can be seen dancing and singing on the stage. Then Malema allegedly is seen firing the rifle into the air before he hands it over to Adriaan Snyman. Malema then give’s EFF chairman Dali Mpofu a high five.
Malema faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and three counts of contravening the Firearms Control Act.
Malema’s co-accused in the matter, Snyman, faces one count of contravening the Firearms Controls Act (the State alleges that he handed the firearm to Malema). Snyman owns a security company and is also a Malema’s security team member.
