Pensioner arrested with 106 firearms hidden under beds and wardrobes
A 67-year-old man found in possession of 106 firearms, over a thousand assorted live rounds of ammunition, is out on bail of R6 000 following his court appearance in Mpumalanga last week.
According to police, this is an enormous breakthrough reached with officials from the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) VISPOL Detectives, Organized Crime and Designated Firearms.
Members discovered the following:
106 firearms consisting of 14 rifles, eight shotguns, 84 pistols, 9 mm pistols and 1 704 various assorted live rounds of ammo.
The guns were also not kept in a safe but stored in wardrobes and under beds.
Police found some expired licenses which could belong to a security company.
The pensioner could not account for about 20 firearms, including four pistols for which he did not have a license.
All the guns will go for ballistic testing to determine any linkages to crimes committed in the country.
Police cannot rule out the possibility of more charges and more arrests.
The man, who was identified in the local media as Gugu Boy Elias Mnisi, will be back in court on the 10th of April.
Police commended the whistle-blowers who assisted in the breakthrough.
