A Plettenberg Bay man was on Saturday recovering in hospital after he was bitten by a Ragged Tooth shark that he had caught while fishing at Papiesfontein, north-east of Jeffreys Bay.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the 62-year-old man landed the shark at around midday on Friday and, while attempting to free it and released from the fishing gear, the shark bit the man.
Lambinon says the man was fishing with a friend, in preparation for an upcoming angling competition.
“Our NSRI Jeffreys Bay rescue vehicle, Eastern Cape government Health EMS, Gardmed ambulance services and Relay ambulance services were activated,” Lambinon said.
He said on arrival on the scene the man’s friend had already applied tourniquets to injuries, lacerations and puncture wounds to the man’s hand and to his calf.
“The man was transported to hospital by a Gardmed ambulance in a stable condition where ongoing medical treatment continues and he is expected to make a full recovery.”
