Romanian ambassador to Nairobi recalled after racial comment

Romania has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, following an apparent racial comment made by him.

Dragos Tigau made the comments during a meeting at a UN building in Nairobi, according to the BBC.

Tigau saw a monkey through a window and is alleged to have said: ‘The African group has joined us.’

Tigau’s behaviour was revealed by Kenyan officials last week. Romanian authorities said that had begun making arrangements to recall Tigau once they were made aware of his comments.

The Romanian foreign ministry said in a statement: ‘We deeply regret this situation and offer our apologies to all those who have been affected. Any behaviours or comments of a racist nature are completely unacceptable.’
