The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed on Monday that the disciplinary proceedings relating to the incident that took place at Nic Diederichs High School on 31 January 2023 were held on Sunday, 12 February 2023.
These proceedings stem from an incident captured in a video that was widely circulated on social media, where a Grade 10 boy learner was seen allegedly assaulting a Grade 10 girl learner.
“As such, the hearing resulted in a recommendation being made to our Head of Department (HED) that the said learner should be expelled from school,” says Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education.
Accordingly, a final decision on this recommendation will be made by the HOD and the same will be communicated in due course.
“Once again, we strongly condemn all acts of misconduct by learners towards other learners. Learner’s poor discipline in our schools will be met with consequences. We also plead with parents to help enforce discipline on their children inside and outside the school environment,” Mabona said.
The girl’s parents reported a charge of assault to police.
