Residents of the town of Orania in the Northern Cape now want their OWN national anthem as part of its pursuit of complete independence.
ORANIA WANT THIS AS PART OF THEIR PURSUIT TO COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE
The Orania Arts Council (OKeR) announced this week that it would facilitate a competition for poets and composers to create a national anthem for Orania.
The persons who write the winning lyrics and compose the winning melody each win R10 000.
Like many other symbols, the song will also become a symbol unique to Orania.
THE TOWN HAS ITS OWN CURRENCY
The town has a population of 1,085 (estimate, 2014) and measures 8.95 km2 (3.46 sq mi). Afrikaans is the main language, spoken by 98.4 percent of the population and English is spoken by 1,6 percent.
The town is run by a council, which is the main political institution responsible for running the town’s daily affairs.
The community has its own currency, the Ora, pegged to the South African Rand.
DO YOU HAVE A SONG IN MIND? YOU COULD WIN R10 000
The town is not independent but the Constitution of South Africa permits its existence under a clause that allows for the right to self-determination.
Anje Boshoff, OKeR board member, reportedly said residents and non-residents of Orania can enter the competition, and he encourages participants to draw inspiration from “The Voice of South Africa”, “Flower of Scotland,” and “Ireland’s Call”.

“When composing a national anthem, it very quickly becomes obvious that any beautiful song will not do.”

    said Boshoff.
THE SONG NEEDS TO CAPTURE THE HEART AND SOUL OF ORANIA
She said this is why it is important that the song captures the heart and soul of Orania at the same time, be a timeless masterpiece.
The competition will take place in two rounds: lyric and melody.
Once the best lyric entry is selected, it will be made available to composers to write a melody.
The winner of the best lyrics and the winner of the best melody will be announced to the public by 10 October 2024. Each winner will get an R10 000 prize.
