Endangered Species Unit arrest 9 with protected flora, Worcester

In the fight against the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the province, committed police officers continued with their mandate and arrested suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and Flora.

Police members of the Worcester Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit arrested nine suspects aged between 22 and 39 on a charge of possession of protected flora without documentation.

The members stopped and searched a vehicle in Robertson Road, Worcester on Sunday 22 January 2023.

During the search, they found three bags of Flora, an endangered plant species that only grows on one farm in South Africa, and nowhere else in the world.

In an unrelated intervention members attached to Operation Lockdown were busy conducting a vehicle check point in Lansdowne Road on Monday 23 January 2023.

They stopped and searched the occupants of a silver VW Polo and confiscated revolver with ammunition. A 49-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile police members were busy with patrols on Monday 23 January 2023 in Minister Street in Mfuleni when they stopped and searched the occupants of a Mercedes Benz sedan and conducted an intense search.

They confiscated a pistol with ammunition. Three adult males were arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Khayelitsha, Blue Downs and Worcester Magistrate’s court on the mentioned charges.
