On Wednesday, 18 January 2023 the Johannesburg High Court sentenced a 28-year-old woman and her 26-year-old brother to three life imprisonment terms and an additional 18 months in prison each on charges of rape and murder.
Both the accused are Congolese nationals and were also found guilty for the contravention of section 49(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.
The sibling duo booked into a hotel with their children in April 2021 and embarked on ‘endless’ prayers; the brother’s one-year-old daughter was with them.
The mother of the victim believed their financial situation would improve if both herself and her brother prayed and sacrificed a child.
Both the minor girls were also raped during the ‘ritual’, the one year old girl survived the horrific ordeal.
The case was assigned to Sergeant Phetole Moses Semosa who is a detective at the provincial Harmful and Occult Related Practices (HORP) unit.
Semosa’s scrupulous investigation and commitment resulted in a solid case presented in court against the sibling duo.
The matter was swiftly finalised and justice was served.
