On Sunday 22 January 2023, a farmer (53) near Coega in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa managed to avoid serious injury when he made it into his home and locked the door.
This after farmworkers, who were under the influence of alcohol, arrived at the farm and two of them started assaulting the farmer.
Earlier in the day the farmer reported to the police that his bakkie was missing and suspected that the farm workers may have taken it.
When the workers returned and after the farmer had locked himself in the house they smashed the vehicle’s door and window.
The police responded to the attack and five farm workers were arrested and charged with malicious damage to property and attempted murder.
