Embezzlement of PSIRA funds, Hawks arrest suspect

The Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks arrested Galela Mdlekeza (51) on 7 February 2023 for charges of theft of Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) funds.

It is alleged that in January 2021, the Finance Manager at PSIRA Head Office discovered that an amount of R8 200-00, which was meant to be deposited from Mthatha PSIRA office, was not reflecting on the bank statement of PSIRA.

Upon enquiring from Mdlekeza who was a team leader in Mthatha office then, he could not give any reasonable explanation for the outstanding amount which should be received for daily services rendered by office.

An internal investigation was instituted in June 2021 and it revealed that between June and November 2021 cash to the value of more than R970 000 was reportedly missing.

The matter was referred to the Hawks for intensive investigation which resulted in Mdlekeza’s arrest on 7 February 2023.

He appeared in Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on the same day and he was released on R2000-00 bail. The matter was remanded to 9 March 2023 for copies of the dockets.

The team is once more commended by the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenywa for the sterling job.
