Foiled Mthatha cash-in-transit heist, 6th suspect tracked down

A sixth suspect (27) in a foiled cash-in-transit heist is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court on 13 February 2023. He was arrested in a joint operation by the Provincial Cash-In-Transit (CIT) Task Team comprised of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Eastern Cape Crime Intelligence, Queenstown Public Order Police (POP) and OR Tambo Tactical Response Team (TRT) on 9 February 2023.

The five co-accused; Zukisa Nombiza (39), Yandisa Gomo (36), Masithembe Msongelwa (27), Yamkela Nomvala (32) and Lindokuhle Kheswa (28) were remanded in custody after their arrest on 26 January 2023 near Mvumelwano Location in Qumbu.

They were arrested on charges of attempted cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.

It is alleged that on 26 January 2023 at about 11:00, the Eastern Cape Task Team members were following information on an attempted CIT robbery that occurred at a supermarket in Mthatha on Wednesday, 25 January 2023 where a Fidelity Cash Solution truck was involved.

It is further alleged that a security guard was shot and robbed of his firearm during the ordeal.

A bystander was also hit by a stray bullet.

The Task Team members assisted by TRT members spotted a suspicious white Toyota Corolla with five armed occupants and it was stopped on the N2 highway where the suspects were apprehended. They were found in possession of four unlicensed firearms which included three 9mm pistols, a revolver and ammunition. During preliminary investigation, four of the suspects were linked to a number of CIT heists in the province.

On 9 February 2023 at about 17:00, police received information about a Toyota single cab bakkie which is one of the vehicles that were allegedly used by the suspects during the attempted robbery that it was parked at Mthatha plaza.

The team tactically approached the occupant in a bakkie after he was positively identified by the investigating team and he was arrested.

The five co-accused will return to Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on 13 February 2023 for formal bail application.
