A 52-year-old former attorney is expected to appear before the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on 7 April 2023 on charges of fraud, contravention of Legal Practice Act and contempt of court.
The complainant allegedly approached the suspect for legal representation on his divorce matter and paid R21 000-00.
The suspect failed to inform the complainant that he was disbarred and therefore cannot practice as an attorney.
In 2021, the complainant learned that the suspect was disbarred in 2018 and he opened a case against the suspect.
The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation based in Welkom and the suspect was served with summons on 13 March 2023.
