Siyabuswa CIT robbery, van bombed, 1 suspect wounded

Police in Siyabuswa arrested a 40-year-old old suspect following a Cash-In-Transit (CIT) robbery incident which occurred on Friday morning, 24 March 2023.

According to information about the said incident, it is said that a cash van was reportedly attacked by about six armed suspects on the R573 Road whilst driving from Marble Hall direction towards Siyabuswa.

It is further reported that the suspects fired some shots, injuring one guard whilst the security vehicle was brought to a halt after its tyres were riddled by the gunshots.

The suspects are said to have disarmed the security officers before detonating some explosives to access cash from the van.

The suspects reportedly got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from the van before they fled the scene. It was then realised that one security guard sustained some injuries on the upper body whilst his colleagues were unharmed during the incident.

One of the suspects’ vehicles was found abandoned not far from the scene. Police immediately launched an investigation whereby one suspect was found hiding in the nearby bushes with a gunshot wound on his stomach.

He was then arrested and he is currently under heavy police guard in hospital.

He is expected to appear in the Siyabuswa Magistrate’s Court soon meanwhile police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPS App.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi indicated that police in Mpumalanga are doing their best to deal decisively with Crime, which includes the arresting of all suspects and confiscating unlicensed and illegal firearms. “The country is faced with the challenge of business robberies coupled with Cash-In-Transit incidents whereby high calibre firearms are used. To fight against such a pandemic, all unlicensed and illegal firearms have to be removed from the wrong hands. We therefore challenge the public to support us in this endeavour by providing valuable information to the police” said the General.
