Orange Farm police in shootout with armed robbers, cop wounded

Three armed alleged robbery suspects, aged between 30 and 32, were arrested in Evaton while the other two fled the scene following a robbery.

The suspects were involved in a shootout with the police who were responding to the robbery on Monday, 24 April 2023, at approximately 10:30.

The police recovered one of the firearms that were used by the suspects during the robbery.

Police officers from Orange Farms Police Station were conducting routine crime prevention patrols when they received information about people that were driving in a white Quantum minibus and robbing people in the area.

Police went searching for the suspects and spotted the minibus that matched the description. While trying to stop the car, the suspects sped off and a high-speed chase ensued, which led to a shootout.

The suspects’ car was cornered in Palm Springs and three suspects were arrested while two of them fled on foot. Police recovered one firearm and impounded the minibus.

A police officer was injured during the shootout and taken to the nearest medical care centre in a stable condition.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, applauded the police officers who acted promptly after receiving information from the community and intercepted the suspects. He also thanked the community who witnessed the crime and immediately reported it to the police.

The arrested suspects are facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm, amongst other crimes. They are expected to appear before Sebokeng Magistrate Court in due course.
