Taking initiative and being able to act on your own, irrespective whether a police official is on or off duty, is what makes one stand out among your fellow officers.
On Tuesday afternoon, 25 April 2023 at about 16:20, an off duty detective Constable from SAPS Uitenhage selflessly heeded to his calling when he spotted a possible suspect allegedly involved in a business robbery at a liquor store the previous day, 24 April 2023.
The member followed the suspect for a while before calling for backup.
Two other detective officers joined him and together they monitored the suspect’s movements. The suspect boarded a taxi into central and when he alighted from the taxi, he was joined by two other males. They then walked into a retail store in Caledon Street.
At this stage, when they suspected that a robbery was about to happen, backup was requested from their Vispol members. As they entered the store, the suspects were caught ‘red handed’ loading cash into bags.
All three suspects, aged 23, 25 and 41 were arrested for business robbery.
The 25-year-old suspect was also positively linked to the business robbery of the liquor store.
Detectives are busy probing the possible connection of the other two suspects in the liquor store robbery as well.
The suspects will appear in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 April 2023 on their respective charges.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the dedicated action of the off duty Constable and his colleagues. ’The action of the member indicates that he selflessly put the safety of the community before his own needs. Not only were the suspects arrested but one has been positively linked to another robbery. These suspects will be thoroughly profiled to determine possible links to other crimes as well,’ added Maj Gen Ncata.
