On Thursday, 27 April 2023 at about 22:30, officers attached to Operation Restore were patrolling Matiloshe Street, Town Two when they noticed a Silver Grey Opel with a male occupant acting suspiciously as he wanted to hide something under the driver’s seat. The members stopped the vehicle and searched the occupant and vehicle upon which they found a Baby Browning Star pistol under the driver seat. The serial number is only partially readable.
Later the same evening at approximately 23:00 the members again patrolled the same street in Lingelethu West when they noticed an occupant seated on the rear seat of a Grey VW Polo. The man became uncomfortable and acted suspiciously. The officers approached the vehicle and searched the occupant. During the search the officer noticed a Silver Norinco at the feet of the suspect. He was immediately arrested. On further inspection of the firearm it was discovered that the serial number had been filed off.
Both suspects will be charged for firearm related offences under the Firearms Control Act 2000, Act 60 of 2000 and will appear in court soon.
In an unrelated matter, on Thursday 27 April 2023 at about 03:00, members attached to the Maitland Flying Squad was busy patrolling Voortrekker Road, Kensington, when they noticed a stationary white Nissan Np200 abandoned near the corner of 18th Avenue and Voortrekker road. They notice that the vehicle has no rear number plates. Further inspection of the vehicle’s licence disk revealed that the vehicle was stolen in Wynberg. Whilst members kept the vehicle under observation, they noticed three unknown men got into the vehicle and drove off. Members gave chase and pulled the vehicle off the road in Voortrekker Road. Three suspects age 31, 38 and 49 were arrested for possession of stolen vehicle. Once charge they will appear in Cape Town Magistrate Court.
On Wednesday, 26 April 2023 at about 11:00, members of the Anti-Economical Crime Team, Extortion Task Team, Hawks, Crime Intelligence and Flash conducted a joined operation against counterfeit goods. The members executed a searched and seizure warrant at a cellular telephone shop in Hazel Road, Gatesville, Athlone. They searched the premises and confiscated eight bags containing various Samsung counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R1,5 million. No arrest have been made, the owner was served with a notice to appear at the local magistrates court. Investigations continues.
On 26 April 2023, members of Milnerton SAPS Crime Prevention were doing patrols in Nkomo Drive, Joe Slovo when they received information about a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm. They went to the identified address and searched the premises upon which they found a firearm and arrested an adult male for the possession of a prohibited 7.65 pistol. He will appear in court once charged for the illegal possession of a firearm.
Provincial police management has lauded the members or their dedicated vigilance to rid our community of the prevalence of unlicensed firearms that threatens the safety of society. The availability of contraband poses a negative impact on the economy of the country and unemployment. Hopefully theses arrests will act as deterrent against the commission of such crimes.
