Isipingo Post Office robbery, accused sentenced

On 26 April 2023, the Durban Regional Court sentenced Ayanda Mthembu (26) to 12 years’ imprisonment for armed robbery perpetrated at Isipingo Post Office.

On 23 February 2021 Mthembu and his accomplices entered a Post Office at a gunpoint and assaulted the staff.

They then took an undisclosed amount of cash and five cell phones.

They fled the scene in their getaway vehicle which was later spotted at Umlazi area.

A high speed chase and shootout ensued.

Mthembu was injured during the shootout and was taken to hospital under police guard.

Mthembu was charged for armed robbery and he appeared in court several times until he was convicted.
