Two suspects were arrested on 26 May 2023 for the murder that occurred in October 2022 in Westbury, Sophiatown.
On the day of the incident, the victim was driving out of his yard in Westbury when he was accosted by two men armed with firearms. They reportedly shot at him and he lost control of the vehicle which then collided into the wall of another house.
The suspects fled the scene and the victim was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The case was handed to the Provincial Anti-Gang unit for further investigations.
On 19 December 2022 a 23-year-old man was arrested in connection to that murder and was later released as the case was not place on the court roll.
That did not deter the investigation team, as they continued working tirelessly on the case. On 23 May 2023 the court issued a warrant of arrests for two suspects including the initial suspect and on 26 May 2023 the suspects were traced and arrested.
They both appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 26 May 2023 and they were remanded in custody until 2 June 2023 for bail application.
The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has praised the investigation team for working hard in ensuring that suspects are brought to book. “The arrest is appreciated and I am confident that our detectives will continue making arrests especially on the murder cases of Westbury which had been engulfed by murders related to gang violence, said Lt Gen Mawela
