Bongani Mzizi has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Evander Regional court after entering into a plea deal with the State following his conviction on charges of tempering with essential infrastructure, theft of petrol from the pipeline and possession of suspected stolen petrol.

Mzizi’s sentencing come from an incident which occurred on the 2 July 2022, where a drop in pressure of the pipeline was noticed prompting the dispatch of security to investigate.

On their way, the security noticed a tanker coming from the area of the pressure drop.

They attempted to stop the tanker to no avail and gave chase until in Springs where the driver of the tanker as well as crew attempted to make their escape.

With the assistance of SAPS Springs, the security apprehended the two accused and the tanker was found to be loading 40 litres of petrol. Preliminary investigation matched the sample to that from the tanker to that from the crime scene and the two accused were arrested.

The two cases, Leslie and Springs were combined for further investigation by the Middleburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation

The matter against accused his accomplice, Harold Mabunda was remanded to 18 August 2023 for trial at Evander Regional Court.
