Police recover unlicensed firearms, Gansbaai

The efforts of police members in the Western Cape were rewarded on Saturday, 17 June 2023, when they arrested two males on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and one female on charges of dealing in drugs and the possession of an imitation firearm.

Gansbaai SAPS members responded to information that firearms are being kept in a flat at a local boarding lodge.

The members operationalised the information and tactically approached the premises in Mark Street. Upon entering the flat, they searched the premises and confiscated five rifles and one airgun with ammunition.

The 55-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as he was in no position to produce a valid licence to be in possession of the mentioned firearms.

In an unrelated intervention police members attached to Operation Restore formed part of an intelligence driven operation. The members entered an address in Thembisa Street in Gugulethu and searched the entire premises.

Their persistence was rewarded when they confiscated 1645 mandrax tablets and cash, including an imitation firearm hidden inside a wardrobe in the bedroom. They arrested and detained a 37-year-old women on charges of dealing in drugs and the possession of an imitation firearm.

Meanwhile police members deployed in Nyanga conducted high density patrols in Browns Farm, notorious for serious and violent crimes. They surprised the occupants inside a shack with their presence and searched the inner and outer perimeters and recovered a 9mm pistol with ammunition.

The members arrested a 19-year-old man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Hermanus and Athlone Magistrate court’s on the mentioned charges.
