‘The decaying state of Gauteng’s roads can only be blamed on the ANC government’

The FF Plus will not allow the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport to keep dragging its feet when it comes to repairing dangerous roads in the province.

Pressure from the FF Plus resulted in repair work on the R500 between Carletonville and the R24 resuming after the project initially came to a standstill in March.

The R500 serves as a main route between Carletonville, with large mining operations, and Johannesburg, Randfontein and Krugersdorp.

Contractors had described the road’s surface as ‘terrible’ and it was so inaccessible that motorists had to drive in the veld next to the road.

The Department decided to reseal only 3 kms of the road’s surface and to fill the potholes on the rest of the road.

The FF Plus would have preferred to see the entire 15 kms of the seriously damaged road surface replaced.

The party warned the Gauteng government that its downward adjustment of the Department’s budget is inadvisable.

There is an ever-increasing demand for road repairs in Gauteng, and merely filling potholes is not sustainable. The Department’s budget ought to have been doubled.

The decaying state of Gauteng’s roads can only be blamed on the ANC government’s neglect of the province’s road transport system.
