The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed the sentencing handed down to a man who stabbed his uncle (40) towards the end of last year (2022) and nearly killed him.
On Tuesday, 20 June 2023 the Mhala Regional Court sentenced Samkelo Mbowane (36) for attempted murder which occurred on 1 November 2022 at Goromani near the Calcutta area near Bushbuckridge.
The court heard how on that fateful day, a family argument between the accused and his uncle over meat turned violent in front of the uncleâs friends. It is said that during the squabble, Mbowane was fuming. He then went to the room and came back with a knife which he used to stab his uncle multiple times.
The uncle sustained some injuries on the eye, left arm, shoulder, neck and back.
He was rescued by the people who had visited the family. They took the victim to a nearby hospital (Matikwana hospital) for medical treatment.
The accused was previously convicted and sentenced to 10 yearsâ imprisonment in 2016 for murder as well as for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. During that period when he attacked his uncle, Mbowane was reportedly on parole.
A case of attempted murder was subsequently opened at Calcutta Police Station and after an investigation was conducted, the accused was apprehended at home in Madras outside Hazyview on 04 November 2022 and thanks to members from Correctional Services who heard that the accused was involved in crime. In fact, they captured him and brought him to the authorities. He was then charged accordingly. He was then taken to court and after the state presented a strong case against him, he was convicted hence his sentencing to 15 yearsâ imprisonment for attempted murder.
The accused was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has further used this sentence to encourage other members of the public, not to hide criminal activities that are being committed by their family members. âIf we become silent whenever we witness crime taking place in our eyes, we are in fact putting our lives in serious danger because we can end up being attacked or killed by the very same people we are trying to protect.
