RAF fraud, accused sentenced, Gqeberha

Gqeberha New Law Regional Court convicted and sentenced Keith Theodore Mtsimela (44) on 23 June 2023 for charges of fraud.

In February 2018, Mtsimela submitted a false claim to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) through his attorney. He claimed that he was involved in a hit and run accident on 25 October 2017 at Lewes Street, Algoa Park.

It is further reported that RAF had suspicions on this matter and established their internal investigations as they normally do before they process the payments for claimants.

During the investigation, it was established that the accident never occurred.

The matter was then referred to Gqeberha based Serious Corruption Investigation of the Hawks for probing where it was confirmed that RAF was prejudiced cash to the value of more than R1.3 million.

Mtsimela was thus arrested by the Hawks on 28 February 2023 and was released on bail.

After a couple of court appearances, Mtsimela was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to a fine of R3000 and five years imprisonment suspended for five years provided the similar offence is not committed during the suspension period.
