The ANC’s poor planning and substandard government housing have once again taken its toll with the Inanda tornado, which recently hit KwaZulu-Natal.
This was clearly evident during the visit by the parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee on Flood Disaster Relief and Recovery to the area on 28 June 2023.
The enormous damage could have been much less if the authorities had complied with the relevant development and building regulations.
Housing structures were, however, built against unsafe inclines and much too close to rivers. Houses, which are meant to withstand gale-force winds and floods, suffered severe structural damage and a great number of roofs were blown off.
It is clear that quality control was not done and building regulations were not complied with. In this case, it claimed numerous lives and many people are still missing.
It is a disgrace that residents once again bore the brunt of the ANC government’s mismanagement, especially so soon after recovering from the impact of the 2022 floods in the area.
Taxpayers countrywide must now shell out for disaster relief and aid for residents. This includes, among other things, procuring new building materials.
South Africans deserve better than the ANC.
