Fuel theft from Transnet pipeline, 2 in Vereening court

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team based in Vaal Rand together with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) secured a conviction of two foreign nationals Razzak Okai (35) and Goerge Chinyongo (33) when they appeared in the Vereening Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 5 July 2023.

They were both found guilty on charges of fuel theft, tampering with essential infrastructure in contravening the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015. Razzak Okai was also found guilty for contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.

The Hawks (SOCI) members based in Vaal Rand received a call about three suspects who were busy tempering with the Transnet’s fuel pipeline in Kliprivier on 16 March 2020.

Two of the three suspects were arrested in possession of Transnet fuel worth R106 000.

The third accused, Sam Bila (30) remains at large and the court issued a warrant for his arrest.

Meanwhile the duo was successfully denied bail and made several court appearances until their conviction on Wednesday.

They will be back in the same court on Thursday, 20 July 2023 for sentencing.
