Riverlea illegal mining national intervention

GAUTENG – The members in Riverlea, deployed to combat illegal mining since 01 August 2023, have so far arrested 20 undocumented persons. The suspects are being processed at the processing centre established at the local police station which comprises of among others, Crime Intelligence, Detectives as well as Home Affairs Immigration Department.

The members have been walking the streets of Zamimpilo informal settlement since the early hours of this morning, conducting stop and searches and interacting with the community in search of illegal miners, firearms and explosives.

The community has been cooperating with the police by sharing information about the shacks that are being utilised by illegal miners to process their gold bearing sand. At this stage the police have confiscated the illegal miners’ tools of trade that include pendukas, gas bottles and bags of gold bearing sand.

Specialised Units that are deployed in the area comprise of National Intervention Unit (NIU), Tactical Response Teams (TRT), Public Order Police (POP), Crime Intelligence, Detectives as well as local/district police and Johannesburg Metro Police. The deployments will remain in Langlaagte policing precinct until the Riverlea illegal mining activities have been stabilised.

Some of the illegal mining holes a cross the road from Zamimpilo are currently being closed by the municipality’s TLBs.
