Alleged illegal explosives provider arrested in Pienaar

NELSPRUIT – The number of CIT, ATM and Drop in safe bombings in the province necessitated the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela to give directives that police have to establish those involved in crippling the provinces economy, the supplies of both explosives and firearms.

Mpumalanga SAPS Crime Intelligent Unit managed to gather positive information which was operationalised and executed in conjunction with Tactical Response Team, Pienaar Visible Policing and Detectives.

The team made a major breakthrough when a 36-year-old suspect was nabbed with 58 explosives, seven explosive wires and one plastic bag containing soundless stone cracking powder.

The arrested foreign national is believed to be linked to a string of Drop in safes, ATM bombings as well as unlawful trading with explosives in the province.

The suspect was arrested in Pienaar this morning 09 August 2023 at about 01:30.

Well sourced information led police to the suspect’s rented room at Lihawu outside the City of Mbombela where he was found with a number of explosives.

The suspect is expected to appear in Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court tomorrow Thursday 10 August 2023 for unlawful possession of explosives. Police cannot rule out possibilities of adding other charges pending investigation.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed the arrest and commended police who successfully gathered the information as well as the team involved in executing the operation.
